About us
Small by choice.
Expert by necessity.
Asbestos Ireland is a deliberately independent consultancy. We survey, assess, and advise — and we do nothing else. That is not a limitation. It is the point.
Who we are
Two people. One focus.
Asbestos Ireland is Ian and Sylvie — a husband and wife team operating across the Republic of Ireland. Ian carries out every survey and handles all technical consultancy. Sylvie manages operations, scheduling, and ensures the business runs the way it should.
We set the business up because Ian had spent 25 years working in the asbestos industry for other people - surveyors, consultancies, removal contractors - and believed he could do it better independently. Not bigger. Better.
When you contact Asbestos Ireland, you speak to us directly. You do not get passed around. You do not deal with someone reading from a script. You get the people who will actually carry out your survey.
Ian
Surveyor & Principal Consultant
25+ years in the asbestos industry across engineering, survey, analysis, and consultancy. Trained as an electrical and mechanical engineer before moving into asbestos surveying in the early 2000s — working across London Underground, the Docklands Light Railway, and large-scale industrial environments before establishing Asbestos Ireland.
If a report comes from Asbestos Ireland, Ian surveyed the building. No subcontractors. No junior surveyors sent out unsupervised. That matters more than most people realise.
Sylvia
Operations & Company Secretary
Manages all client scheduling, invoicing, and day-to-day operations. The reason enquiries are answered promptly, surveys are booked efficiently, and nothing falls through the cracks.
Qualifications & membership
Qualified to the highest level available.
In Ireland, the number of asbestos surveyors holding the full range of specialist qualifications is small. Ian is among them - and it is something clients, architects, and contractors consistently comment on when they see the detail and accuracy of our reports.
For homeowners and those unfamiliar with the industry, what this means in practice is straightforward: when you commission a survey from Asbestos Ireland, it is carried out by someone who has demonstrated the highest level of technical competence the industry requires.
BOHS Certificate of Competence in Asbestos (CoCA)
The highest individual qualification available in the asbestos field. Covers all specialist P-module assessments. Held by very few practitioners in Ireland.
Licentiate Member — Faculty of Asbestos Consultants
Active membership of the professional body for asbestos consultancy in Ireland and the UK, with ongoing engagement with regulatory updates and industry best practice.
UKAS-accredited laboratory partners
All samples are analysed at independently accredited laboratories. Results are not interpreted by us — they are tested, verified, and reported by accredited analysts.
Flow Mobile field software
Surveys are recorded and managed using specialist asbestos survey software, producing consistent, structured, and auditable reports.
Background
25+ years in the industry.
Ian's route into asbestos surveying came through engineering. He spent the early part of his career as a qualified electrical and mechanical engineer - working on major infrastructure projects including the Docklands Light Railway and the Jubilee Line extension - before moving into asbestos consultancy in the early 2000s.
That engineering background shapes the way we work. Asbestos surveying is fundamentally a technical discipline - understanding buildings, materials, construction methods, and how structures behave. An engineer who has worked inside them understands things that a surveyor trained only in a classroom does not.
Asbestos Ireland was established when Ian decided that the right way to do this work was independently - without the conflicts of interest that come from being connected to removal contractors, and without the pressure to grow a business at the expense of the quality of the work.

Now
How we work
A few things that matter to us.
Independence is not a selling point. It is a discipline.
We do not carry out removal work. We do not refer clients to contractors on a commercial basis. When we tell you asbestos can be safely left in place, it is because we believe it - not because there is no removal job in it for us.
Reports that get used.
Our reports are detailed, colour-coded, and written to be understood - not filed away. Architects, contractors, and building managers consistently comment on the quality and usability of our survey reports.
We answer the same day.
Every enquiry is responded to within the same working day where possible. If asbestos is found unexpectedly during works, we are available around the clock. We will tell you what to do and get to you as soon as we can.
We stay small deliberately.
We are not trying to build a large business. We are trying to do good work for clients who need it. Staying small means every survey is carried out to the same standard - by the same person - every time.
